What makes the decision on Monday supposedly controversial? Where has this myth of controversy come from?
As we have examined all of the evidence and arguments we are left puzzling over this continued “controversy”. In a blog post last week, we recognized that there is a lot to consider in these kinds of complex decisions, but evidence has been overwhelmingly in favour of legalizing secondary suites across the city.
Aldermen cannot rely on arguments claiming that residents in their wards don’t want secondary suites. The latest poll commissioned by the University of Calgary Students’ Union (a statistically valid and independent survey) clearly shows that Calgarians are in favour of secondary suites. You can find the poll here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/49951928/Calgary-Secondary-Suites-Survey-March-3-2011-ZINC-Research They may be hearing from people who are opposed but they must be aware that this is a minority of ward residents.
We recognize how powerful a vocal minority can seem, but the truth of this issue is that it is actually a non-issue; the vast majority of Calgarians have been shown to be in support of a blanket secondary suite bylaw.
As far as we have been able to surmise, the most vocal opposition seems to be coming from (what must be) a very few residents of R1 neighbourhoods who feel that the neighborhood designation should not change without their consent. We have to wonder if they recognize that they really have no say over who their neighbours are. Anyone can purchase and live or rent a home anywhere in the city; they have no guarantee to a “single family lifestyle” regardless of where they have purchased a home.
We know that there have been arguments made against secondary suites. Most of which seem to be red herrings, tossed out in the hopes of detracting from the evidence that has been presented. We must have confidence in our elected officials to be able to sift through these specious arguments and make a decision with the best interests of the city in mind.
We have every confidence that our Council will carefully, thoughtfully, and deliberately consider all the evidence and make the best decision for Calgary. We hope that they can see past the controversy that isn’t.
